How to pull off a tanned skin tone?

We are going to the beach soon and I always look horrible when I darken. Fair skin suits me more, I look prettier lol. When Im dark, I look ugly. Obviously I cannot avoid tanning coz we're hitting the beach. Btw, Im asian so my skin is fair with yellow undertones. :)
